Ratatype’s typing tutor teaches you to type without looking at the keyboard. It is a free course of 15 lessons that starts with where your fingers go and ends with full sentences. You can begin right away, and you don’t need to register to use it.

How the typing course is organized

The lessons run in a fixed order, and each builds on the one before. You start with Home Row Position, where you learn the base position for all ten fingers. Next come the index fingers, then the middle and ring fingers, then the pinkies. Four repetition lessons follow, so the new keys become automatic before you move on.

After that, the course gets more varied: vowel and alphabet cryptograms, common letter combinations, numbers and punctuation, and the Shift key. The final lesson is sentences, which is closest to how you type in real life.

Feedback while you practice

Every exercise shows your typos and your speed in words per minute as you type. If you make too many mistakes, the tutor asks you to try again, and the aim is fewer than three typos before moving on. This keeps accuracy ahead of speed, which is the right order. Fast typing built on bad habits usually stalls at a low speed, while accurate typing speeds up on its own.

The on-screen keyboard shows which key to reach for, so you can check your finger position without looking down at your hands. The tutor needs a desktop or laptop and doesn’t work on mobile.

Tips for getting results

Practice in short sessions. Fifteen minutes a day is better than one long session at the weekend. Keep your eyes on the screen, even when you hit the wrong key, because looking down is the habit you are trying to remove. Our guide on how to type without looking at the keyboard has more advice on breaking that habit.

Slow down if your typo count climbs. A slower, cleaner run teaches your fingers the right movements, and speed returns once the movements are secure. For a wider set of exercises on both fronts, see how to improve your speed and accuracy.

Check your progress

Finish a few lessons, then take the typing test to see how far you have come. You can repeat any lesson as often as you like.
